The Temazcal is the traditional sweat lodge, indigenous to Mexico, much like the lodges of North American natives. These lodges were traditionally used to facilitate the healing of individuals with physical and spiritual ills. The Temazcal that we offer is performed by an authentic local Shaman. Fresh herbs, massage and honoring the elements are just a few things that make this experience naturally blissful and unique. Our Shaman is not strict at all, meaning that the participants are free to drink water and also to exit the sweat to cool down if they feel the need. The name Temazcal, or Temazcalli is made of two Nahuatl words, temas, which means bath, and calli, meaning house.
The practice of inducing sweat has long been known to be healing and beneficial. The Temazcal, because of its special methods, is perhaps the most effective. The list of conditions for which it has been used in the course of centuries is extensive. Temazcals produce a series of physical benefits that include the following:
While all sweat baths produce these effects, the Temazcal, because of the ceremonial manner in which it is shared and the precision with which it can be regulated by the healer in charge of the bath, is a very unique experience. Found only in the Mexican method of using sweat baths, when the participant comes out of the sweat, he or she is carefully wrapped in a sheet and or blanket, and invited to lie down and rest, in a place specially prepared for this purpose, until the body completes its cycle of sweating. The participant is given a cup of herbal tea to help replace liquids lost in the bath, and then left to rest. Most people fall sleep during this rest period, and awaken feeling refreshed, strengthened and revitalized.
